3 Advantages Facet Provides Over Traditional Data Analytics Tools

Facet is an exploratory analytics tool for analyzing time series data. There are a number of reasons why you should be leveraging Facet for your exploratory data analytics needs. Let’s dive into the three main advantages that Facet provides over traditional business intelligence and data visualization tools.

  1. No-code setup: just connect your database and go
  2. Intuitive point-and-click interface: once your data is connected, we make it easy for you to explore
  3. Infinitely explorable, instantly shareable: as you explore, each new view is automatically given a unique URL — share your Facet URL with a teammate and they see your exact view

Facet makes it easy for teams in any company to explore key business metrics and perform root-cause analysis, without writing SQL or engaging a data engineering team.

How a Facet workspace is different

Unlike traditional BI tools, in Facet you don’t build dashboards, you work within a workspace. We call them workspaces because a dashboard is typically static and not easily modified. A Facet workspace is a living working area, easily and endlessly configurable. A workspace acts as an interactive layer on top of your existing dataset, with rich features that empower every user to explore as much (or as little) data as they need.

  • Point-and-click to instantly include new dimensions and metrics
  • Pin the metrics that matter to you, they'll appear as defaults when you open the workspace
  • Split data using helpful indicators, to maximize your signal and find answers fast

In addition to Facet's enhanced data exploration functionality, it's extremely fast and easy to both setup and maintain a workspace. Creating your first workspace takes minutes, and you can automate updates as part of your existing data pipeline. The ease of set-up and minimal maintenance frees data engineers from the tedious work of maintaining dashboards, while still providing business users with easy access to all the data they need.

How dashboards fall short

With traditional tools, you typically have a data analyst in charge of creating dashboards based on predetermined health metrics. These dashboards are designed to provide business users with access to the most important and commonly used metrics, like week-over-week revenue or overall click-through rate. Individual teams may receive more nuanced dashboards, like daily active users or number of bikes in service vs. in maintenance. In either case, the metrics tracked on a dashboard represent a handful of leading indicators for business health. These kinds of dashboards provide a lot of business value, but for many teams, once you have this level of insight it leaves you wanting more.

The common theme of traditional dashboards is that the metrics they provide are predefined, preconfigured, and manually setup – typically by a data analyst or engineer. But business needs (and very often, business data) are constantly evolving. So while a dashboard can answer the question "Is this metric healthy?", it falls short when changes in the business unearth new questions:

  • What can I do if I notice a change in a key metric?
  • What if I need to see the data for a different timeframe?
  • I see that my revenue is lower today vs yesterday. Do I know why, and should I be concerned?

Faced with these questions, a typical team might contact a data analyst and request deeper data analysis. After a few hours, or a few days, the data analyst will return their findings, having identified the cause, and update the existing dashboards to include the answer. Repeated over time, dashboards become so cluttered that they're hard to read, or you end up with so many that you can't keep track.

Facet workspaces solve this problem, removing the need for constant maintenance. And when your BI tool automatically syncs with your core data, your teams are empowered to focus on their core goals. That’s the power of Facet.
